From Space to Place: Business Feng Shui for a Yoga Studio in the Algarve

An acquaintance shared on Instagram that she was looking for fresh ideas for the interior design of her yoga studio in Lagos. Since I truly appreciate her work, I took a closer look at the space, reflected on it — and we began a conversation.

A Space Full of Possibilities and a Clear Vision

The space was bright and open, with lots of white and grey and clear, clean lines. You could immediately feel the Metal element — a strong foundation to build on. And yet, it felt as if it was gently waiting to become a place where people could fully arrive.

The wish and vision is to create a place where people not only come to co-work or work-out, but where they love to stay. And enjoy to come back to connect and to create.

This multipurpose studio is full of potential — with a little attention it will feel even more welcoming and inviting.

Intuitive Feng Shui and the Bagua Perspective

For me, Feng Shui isn’t something you apply mechanically. I work with the Bagua as the essential frame — but I also pay attention to how the space feels and to what the studio owner really wants for her business.

When I placed the Bagua over the floor plan, it became clear that the back-left area — the Wealth sector — needed a bit more care. And Wealth, in this context, is about much more than money. It’s about growth, confidence, visibility, and the ability of a business to develop in a healthy and sustainable way.

This area is connected to the Wood element, which stands for expansion and vitality. By strengthening it through materials, colors and intention, the space begins to support that sense of steady growth — a quiet encouragement towards abundance and stability.

Working with the Elements — Step by Step

In developing the concept, I consciously worked through the Feng Shui elements:

  • Wood to support the energy of the area through furniture, plants and the folding screen represents growth and vitality.

  • Earth to bring warmth through terracotta tones, natural colors and textiles for grounding, warmth and stability.

  • Metal is the foundation of the room, standing for clarity and structure.

  • Water to be added through a mirror that is placed at the side and the color black in the existing furniture to ensure flow and openness.

  • The Fire element I left out at this particular place, as it weakens the Wood (fire burns wood) .

By incorporating the elements, the space starts to feel balanced and in harmony. And gradually, the Wealth area evolved into something that is not only functional, but emotionally supportive:

Balancing the elements and creating welcoming areas where people enjoy spending time.

Keep the space open, make transitions gentler

I defined clear but open zones within the space. Rather than separating areas with solid walls, I worked with subtle boundaries like the bigger rug in the co-working area..

A wooden folding screen creates a distinct workspace behind it — a place where people can work without feeling observed. At the same time, during a yoga class, participants can feel protected from the activity in the co-working area. The separation works both ways, offering privacy without isolation.

The windows were kept free to allow light, air, and a healthy flow of chi. People can enjoy the balcony, the space opens up to the outside. The hard edges of the window frames were softened with light flowing curtains.

The clothing rack also found a new position closer to the entrance. Besides strengthening the boutique area, it now serves a second purpose: gently blocking the direct line of sight from the yoga space to the restroom. This small adjustment enhances comfort and harmony without closing the room.

An important feature became the round, abstract focal point on the back wall.
It offers visual orientation, gathers the gaze — and acts as an energetic anchor within the room.

Inspiration — and Strategic Support for Businesses

Feng Shui concepts are not a set of instructions, but an inspiration. What is implemented, when, and at what pace, is always a personal choice. Every business evolves differently — and spaces should be allowed to evolve with them.

In a professional setting, when a space feels balanced, it strengthens presence and creates an environment where people feel comfortable.

Sometimes, a Feng Shui journey begins with an Instagram story - or a feeling, that something in the space could flow better. And from there it grows into a beautiful concept that supports not only harmony, but the purpose and the vision of a business.
