5 Feng Shui Tips for a Harmonious Summer at Home
Summer is in full swing – and while I love the sunshine, the long evenings, and that vibrant, carefree energy of the season, I also notice how the heat can sometimes feel a little too much. Especially here in the Algarve, where temperatures often rise quickly, I’ve found that a few mindful Feng Shui adjustments can make a real difference in how balanced and refreshed I feel at home.
Let me share five simple Feng Shui tips that help me (and my home!) stay cool and calm during hot summer days – and maybe they’ll inspire you too.
Balance the Fire Element
Summer is the season of the Fire element in Feng Shui – bringing heat, intensity, and high energy. While this is great for passion, joy, and activity, too much fire can lead to restlessness or trouble sleeping.
What I do at home:
When I look around my house, I realize that many of my cushions, curtains, and accessories are already in cooler colours like soft turquoise, light blue, or aqua – colours that naturally belong to the Water element and help calm the space. If you're surrounded by reds or very warm tones, try switching in some blue or black accents, or even hang a painting of a peaceful lake or ocean.
Let Energy Flow – But Keep It Gentle
In summer, Qi (life energy) moves fast. That’s why it’s important to avoid blocked corners and stagnant air – but we also don’t want wild or chaotic energy flows either.
What works for me:
I like to open the windows early in the morning and again in the evening when the air is cooler. This keeps the energy fresh without overheating the house. I also use light, flowing curtains that move gently with the breeze – it brings a soft, harmonious feeling into the room. Even a wind chime on the shady side of the house adds a peaceful, musical touch to the air.
Declutter for Lightness
Hot weather can make heavy, cluttered spaces feel even more overwhelming. Summer is a perfect time for a little home detox!
From my own experience:
I love putting away heavier textures and switching to a more minimal look in the summer. I store thick blankets, clear off surfaces, and let my home breathe. Just walking into a tidy, open room makes me feel more relaxed when the temperatures are high. Even the window blinds can be a little lighter when the days are hot.
Bring Nature In
Summer is nature’s high point – and Feng Shui teaches us that the Wood element, which stands for growth and renewal, can support us during this season.
What I love:
I often bring in a few cut flowers from the garden or buy a small potted herb like mint or lemon balm for the kitchen. Not only do they look and smell beautiful, but they also uplift the energy instantly. Green plants with rounded leaves are especially beneficial and cooling. I personally avoid cacti or spiky plants in my house, as they feel too harsh for a restful space.
Create a Cool, Calm Bedroom Vibe
Hot summer nights can disturb our sleep – and that can throw everything out of balance. In Feng Shui, the bedroom is all about Yin energy, which means rest, recovery, and stillness.
What helps me sleep better:
I choose light, breathable bedding in cotton or linen and keep the palette soft – my walls are painted in light, earthy tones, which feel grounding and peaceful. Sometimes I even place a small bowl of water (changed daily) near the bed as a symbolic way to cool the energy in the room.
Summer is such a joyful season – full of Yang energy, brightness, activity, and warmth. But even the most beautiful summer needs a little balance and stillness to stay enjoyable.
With these gentle Feng Shui tweaks, your home can become a refreshing retreat – a place where you recharge, stay grounded, and truly enjoy the energy of the season.
